HISTORIC Peel Tower in Ramsbottom which has been closed for a year will open on New Year's Day to allow people to see the fabulous view.

Council chiefs 'got on top' to protect the landmark by installing a weatherproof lid to keep the weather from damaging the structure nearly 150 years after it was built. The tower, on Holcombe Hill, has been closed for 12 months initially because of foot and mouth, but later for repairs.

Bury Metro's executive member of the environment Coun Julie Higson said: "This is the first phase of a long term project to enhance the monument with better visitor facilities and improved access.

"Since it was built the open nature of the spiral staircase, which allows water to pour into the tower, has caused problems with the stonework and steps.

"The constant damp resulted in a slippery staircase and that problem has been compounded by feral pigeons which also gain access through the open top. The new cap structure has been designed to allow sufficient space for visitors to walk around the viewing platform, but can then be closed when the tower is not in use.

"It is invisible from ground level and the sides are of steel and glass to ensure light penetrates the stairwell.

"Temporary lighting has also been introduced while further improvements are carried out and this first phase of work will make the Peel Tower safer, more pleasant to use and halt further deterioration."

Peel Tower was built in 1852 at a cost of £1,000 raised through public appeal. It was built in memory of one of Bury's most famous sons Robert Peel, Prime Minister and founder of the police force.
