THE Citizen described a planned new road between Lostock Hall and Walton-le-Dale, part of the proposed £25 million Total Transport Network(TTN) in the article headed 'End of traffic chaos?' ( December 6).
TTN's proposal earlier this year, as a solution to Preston's peak period traffic congestion, is likely to prove a waste of money.
What is the point in helping commuter motorists get into Preston more quickly, if Preston itself does not have the transport infrastructure in terms of road or car parking capacity, to accommodate the number of vehicles coming into the town.
The only part of Preston's transport infrastructure, that has the capacity to handle an increased volume of traffic, is the bus station. Instead of directing commuters to make use of that facility, its demolition is proposed! The proposed Grosvenor Estates development of the town centre, will only add to the congestion and traffic chaos.
The 2,000 new car parking spaces proposed are not additional parking spaces, they are essentially replacements to be provided for those expected to be lost by the demolition of the bus station and market hall car-parks and various surface level temporary car parks.
In effect fewer than 450 new car parking spaces will be provided to meet the needs of the thousands of new workers and shoppers the Tithebarn Development will pull into Preston.
