POLICE are to launch a crackdown on underage drinkers on a Preston estate
Officers will target groups of teenagers who have been creating problems for residents in Lea.
The clampdown which starts tomorrow, December 21, will also target rogue off-licence owners selling alcohol to teenagers.
Police analysts have identified several target areas including Larches, Savick, Ingol and Tanterton, and officers will patrol the streets confiscating alcohol from anyone underage. Officers will also arrest any teenagers causing a disturbance using a covert camera to spot troublemakers. Police will also prosecute retailers found selling booze to anyone underage.
The operation has been set up in response to complaints from residents about youths in the area.
Inspector Dave Aston, head of Lea Police, said his officers had undertaken a number of successful initiatives to tackle juvenile nuisance issues on local estates.
"We have become concerned at a rising number of youths who are drinking alcohol," he said.
"We will not tolerate this type of anti-social behaviour and with this operation we intend to come down heavily on any teenager who is either drinking alcohol or being generally disruptive.
"This is a message to any local retailer who is tempted to sell alcohol to any underage person. We intend to prosecute anyone found to be breaking the law in this regard. Our main focus is on how we can help to minimise the disruption the people of Lea experience at the hands of inconsiderate and badly behaving youths."
Officers and representatives from the Licensing Department met more than 60 off-licence owners on Friday, December 14, to discuss the issue of underage drinking.
