LANCASHIRE ambulance service is appealing to the public to think before they dial 999 and avoid tying up emergency crews on non-emergency call-outs.
And chief executive David Hill said the 'save time save lives' message is even more important over the festive period - traditionally an extremely busy time for the service.
"For problems which are not immediately life-threatening, I would urge the public to make use of the NHS Direct service by calling 0845 4647," said Mr Hill
"A nurse will provide advice over the telephone and if a 999 ambulance is needed you will be transferred directly to our control room."
Mr Hill said crews will do everything they can to reach life-threatening calls as soon as possible.
"However, it is important that people realise that arriving at hospital by ambulance does not mean they will be treated more quickly in the accident and emergency department where patients will be prioritised in accordance with their condition," he added.
