LANCASHIRE Constabulary has distanced itself from high-pressure salesmen representing rogue alarm companies.
And they have made it clear that the force does not work alongside any private alarm companies.
"The force does not promote or recommend any alarm company or specific brand of equipment," said security systems manager Rebecca Eckersley.
"We would urge people to be very careful when buying an alarm system."
Police advice when dealing with door-to-door salesmen is not to make any decisions, in particular about signing documentation, before comparing prices with at least two other companies.
Companies compliant with the Association of Chief Police Officers Security Systems Policy are recognised by one of two inspectorate bodies - NSI and SSAIB.
Further advice is available from Lancashire Constabulary: 01772 618125.
