POLICE today appealed for witnesses after an elderly woman died following a collision with a car.
Mary Ellen Smith, 85, of Bacup Road, Waterfoot, was crossing the busy Bacup Road near to the junction with Stansfield Road when she was involved in a collision with a silver-coloured Hyundai saloon driven by Neil Hanlon, of Union Terrace, Cloughfold, Rawtenstall.
Mrs Smith was taken to Burnley General Hospital suffering from serious head injuries.
She died later last night.
The acting East Lancashire Coroner Richard Taylor has been informed.
The accident happened at 4.45pm yesterday as Mrs Smith was crossing the road from the direction of the BP garage towards the police station.
Sgt Eric Marshall said Mrs Marshall who lived alone was crossing the road to a home for her regular evening meal when the accident happened.
He said they were appealing for anyone who saw her on the pavement or in the road to contact the police.
The road was partially closed for about one and a half hours while accident investigation officers carried out their inquiries into the incident.
