I WAS disappointed by the reaction of Bury Times readers to Superintendent Steve Westcott's reported comments about policing in Ramsbottom (Dec 14).
He has finally done what should have been done a long time ago. He has told the truth. He has told the people of Ramsbottom that the police do not have an unlimited number of police officers and that they will be sent to jobs considered to be of the highest priority.
Someone mentioned the fact that there is a police station next door to the Royal Bank of Scotland in Ramsbottom, a recent target for an armed robbery. Do people think that there are police officers in there sitting with their feet up and waiting for something to happen?
The staff in the police control rooms work ten-hour shifts, have very stressful jobs and do their very best to ensure that high priority jobs receive immediate attention. They cannot pull police officers out of thin air!
Do not direct your anger and frustration at the police officers and support staff of GMP. Complain to the Home Office, who do not direct enough funding to the police, and to those who allow thousands and thousands of pounds to be wasted on unnecessary administration staff. Or question why GMP staff receive occasional glossy and expensive-to-produce leaflets with their pay packet outlining the importance of "Customer Service"!
