THIEVES brought festive misery to the world-famous Besses O' th' Barn Senior Band.
They ransacked the band's headquarters in Moss Lane, Whitefield, and stole or damaged various instruments.
Band organisers believe the wreckers struck late on Christmas Day or in the early hours of Boxing Day.
The most significant item missing is a boar's head, presented to the band in 1906 during a tour of New Zealand.
Band member Dave Aston said: "They stole a euphonium worth around £3,000 as well as two big bass drums and other percussion instruments. The value of the equipment stolen is between £6,000 and £7,000.
"Some of our instruments were recovered down a nearby railway embankment. They also took our banners, a photocopier and computer equipment." He added: "The boar's head itself is priceless and can't be replaced. Thankfully, most of the band members have their own instruments at home."
Commenting on the damage to the band room, Mr Aston continued: "They trashed the place. They smashed the doors and caused a lot of damage. It's a real mess. They just turned everything over.
"We're now getting everyone together for a clean-up," he added.
The instruments which were stolen or damaged had been left in the premises following a successful concert in Bolton last weekend. The 30-strong senior band, which has won numerous awards, was formed in 1818.
