LANCASHIRE Police Authority has criticised a Government review of the criminal court system for failing to recognise the role of police authorities.

The Performance Review and Audit Committee of the authority raised its concerns about Lord Justice Robin Auld's findings at a meeting on December 4.

The review is seen as the centrepiece of government plans to overhaul the justice system, including changes to court structures and trial procedures, such as abandoning juries for fraud cases.

But Lancashire Police Authority has expressed concern that the review lacks recognition of its role and fails to address the impact of any reforms on police and police authorities. It is currently preparing an official response.
