THE newly revived Colne Gala is again under threat unless more volunteers can be found.

The carnival returned in style in the summer attracting more than 3,000 people to Holt House rugby ground .

Secretary Duncan Leaver said: "We desperately need more volunteers for the committee.

"Because of illness there are only four of us left and there is a lot of work involved in organising the event. Unless more people come forward to help this year's event is in question."

The original Colne Carnival started in 1958 and was one of the major events in Colne's calendar for 20 years.

It then folded through the same problem, lack of volunteers.

It was revived in the early 1980s after three local women, the three Maureens - Davis, Reagan and Banks - first sent food parcels to the troops in the Falklands and then decided to get the gala going again to help local charities.

It again came to grief in the 1990s, started again, but then missed the year 2000.

It returned in style this year as crowds flocked to the new-look event.

Although it had lost its traditional home in Alkincoates Park and the major parade through the town, it still found huge support from visitors at its new Holt House venue.

The committee hoped for a break even position, but ended up providing local charities with £200.

A committee meeting is being held at Holt House Rugby Club on January 7 at 7.30pm.

Anyone interested in helping to keep Colne Gala alive is invited to attend. Further information can be obtained from Mr Leaver on 01282 861195.
