THE black grape that gave birth to the dark wine of Cahors in France and is Argentina's most popular vine now has a new champion. This is a beautifully big, juicy, fruit filled wine from South Africa's Cape. It's strong at 13.5% and will keep or as the label says; "Resisting the temptation to open now could reward you with a wine of greater complexity and enjoyment." DiNotte Pinot Grigio 2000, £3.99, Morrisons IN France, and especially the Alsace, they call the grape Pinot Gris but in Italy it's Pinot Grigio and the quality varies a lot. This example from Verona in the Venice region is super value however and not to be sniffed at. Green apples and lemons spring to mind in a wine that is delicious chilled and a light relief from traditional, heavier liquids drunk at this time of year.
