LEIGH Citizen's Advice Bureau manager Christine Garner is still recovering from the shock of being awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List.

Mrs Garner has been head of the bureau for 20 years and will receive the tribute at Buckingham Palace for her services to the CAB and to the Community Legal Service in Leigh.

Mrs Garner, who lives in Golborne, started as a volunteer with the organisation more than 21 years ago after being made redundant from her job as a personnel officer in Skelmersdale.

The single mum spent a year as a volunteer in Wigan before she successfully applied for the job as manager in Leigh 20 years ago.

Mrs Garner said: "We are a very professional organisation which works to the same standard as solicitors and are now a part of the whole legal services scheme."
