POLICE have put out an urgent warning to elderly people in the area following a series of thefts by bogus callers.

The latest incident happened on New Year's Day and is similar to the three other cases which have taken place in Darwen.

A youth, described as being around 17, called at the pensioner's house on Harwood Street at 11.45am. He told the woman, who was in her 80s, that his football had gone into her back yard and that his dog had also got into her house.

He then followed her into the house but nothing was taken as neighbours heard the disturbance and came round.

It is the second such offence to have taken place in the street. The other incidents happened on Earnsdale Road and Ellen Street.

Det Sgt Ian Critchley, of Darwen, police said: "These are the most despicable offences we have to deal with.

"Every single one has involved women in their 80ss who have been on their own. Luckily in this case neighbours were able to intervene. I ask all people to think about the ethics of these kind of crimes and to tell us if they suspect they know who is responsible for them.

All the victims have been visibly effected by these crimes and elderly people should be mindful not to let anyone into their house and be vigilant."

The youth, who is described as being of medium height with dark hair and a cream zip jacket, was believed to be with two other youths, one was said to be wearing a dark blue top and the other had on dark clothing.

It is thought one was riding a mountain bike.

Darwen CID are investigating the bogus caller crimes together and anyone with any information should call Darwen CID on 01254 353841.
