A MYSTERY benefactor has given elderly mugging victim Gertrude Dockery a happy start to the new year.

This week the Bury Times received five £20 notes through the post. The accompanying letter from A. Ainsworth of Burnley explained that the money was for Mrs Dockery "for her courage and determination in the face of adversity" and wished her a speedy recovery. There was no address or contact number for the sender.

Mrs Dockery (91), had £100 stolen in an attack on December 14 which happened at 2.40pm near her Waverley Place warden-controlled home in Radcliffe. The thief pushed into the back of her and grabbed her bag which contained the money she had set aside to buy Christmas presents.

Mrs Dockery, who was also given £100 by Radcliffe Rotary Club, was delighted when we gave her the money this week.

"I'd like to say thank you to the person who has given this money. I'll put it in the bank."

Although she still suffers from headaches following the attack, she was able to enjoy a pleasant Christmas and New Year with her family and friends.

Mrs Dockery's attacker is described as a white male, 5ft 10ins, aged between 18 and 25, slim, with short fair hair. He wore a beige sweatshirt and trousers. He made his escape in a silver car occupied by two other males.
