THE first half of Preston Grasshoppers' season has followed a similar path to the season before.

Hoppers have only managed four victories from their 13 league fixtures and consequently lie fourth from bottom in the league.

With three sides to be relegated a desperate dogfight with Newbury, Rosslyn Park and Waterloo looks to be in prospect for the New Year.

With three key forwards no longer at the club, the pack has also had to cope with a string of injuries.

The recruitment of ex-England 'A' lock, John Fowler, proved a false hope as he only managed two games before a recurring injury ended his career. The backs can, on their day, be amongst the best in the league with everyone capable of a game winning performance.

Sadly too many off days have occurred and, like the forwards, ball retention must be a priority.

Recent weeks have seen a couple of heavy defeats in contrast to the early season when no less than six games were won or lost by three or less points.

Last season Hoppers turned their fortunes around after Christmas climbing the league table steadily. More of the same is required.
