AS revellers welcomed in the New Year, a happy bundle of babies gave their parents something special to celebrate at the start of 2002.

Champagne corks were popping at the maternity wards at Sharoe Green Hospital, Preston, as parents celebrated the arrival of their special new deliveries, with one couple seeing double.

In all, 14 bundles of joy bounced into the world for the start of the new year -- a cracking surprise for family and friends.

Proud parents Diana and Nick Lowe from Grimsargh, Preston, spent the first night of the new year with twin daughters Gabrielle and Georgia, born just one minute apart at 10.09pm and 10.10pm on January 1.

Little Gabrielle weighed in at 7lb 11oz, and her sister Georgia 6lb 8oz.

Joining the Lowe twins were proud mum Erin Livesey of Hoghton who gave birth to 7lb baby Connor Aden Mason at 5.31 pm.

Then Deborah Holden of Ulnes Walton welcomed a new baby boy, George Thomas Newhouse, into the world at 6.08pm, weighing 5lb 13 oz.
