A CARELESS candle lover started a severe fire in the bedroom of a Blackpool flat.
A candle was lit and left unattended on the windowsill of a ground floor flat in a block of four flats at 123 Preston New Road, on Thursday, January 3.
Two fire crews rushed to the address at just before 9.15pm and one occupant of the flat was treated at the scene by paramedics for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
She was later taken to hospital by ambulance.
The occupant of another flat had to be led to safety by firefighters.
A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "This fire would certainly have been detected earlier if a smoke alarm was fitted in the flat.
"In fact, when we asked the other occupants, there were no smoke alarms in any of the four flats.
"We cannot stress enough the importance of having, and regularly testing, a smoke alarm in your home.
"They are supplied and fitted free by your local fire station."
