SPORTY youngsters in East Bury can join in a fitness frenzy come the New Year.

A huge range of leisure activities has been organised for them, and some for adults, from football and Cricket to badminton and fencing.

Louise Robbins, East Bury sports outreach worker, said: "We have tried to cater for a variety of ages and abilities, with a strong emphasis on having fun and trying something new. It is all action in East Bury at the moment and in 2002, there will be even more to do."

The activities will comprise:

Football for the Springs estate. Kicking off every Wednesday from 6pm-7pm, there will be coaching sessions at Goshen Sports Centre for boys and girls aged ten-13 and boys aged 14-16. Occasional matches are planned with the intention of entering a league next season. Contact Anna Forster on 253 6200. Fencing for Broad Oak High School pupils. Working with Nigel Dawson, the head of PE, there will be fencing for pupils on Mondays (beginning on January 14) between 3.30pm-4.30pm. The Salle Kiss Fencing Club will then hold open sessions on Monday evenings from 6pm-9pm. Contact Natalia on 797 5179.

Legs, bums and tums -- at Broad Oak High School each Monday, starting on January 14, from 7pm-7.45pm. Free sessions for women only.

Community badminton sessions at Broad Oak High School every Tuesday from 5.30pm-6.25pm for players aged ten-12, and every Tuesday from 6.30pm-7.25pm for those aged 13-18.

Sessions cost 50p per person.

These sessions will also offer three weeks of specialist coaching on match play, ahead of a badminton doubles competition organised for participants from East Bury as part of the town's Commonwealth Games themed activities.

Entry will be £1 a pair which will give automatic entry into a prize draw for tickets to watch the Games badminton competition. Competition dates are February 19 for those aged ten-13, and February 21 for those aged 14-16.

Cricket at Broad Oak High School every Thursday from 6pm-7pm for boys and girls aged ten-13. The cost is 50p a session.

Louise hopes to set up a support group, and is looking for people who have ideas for events or who can help plan them. The first meeting is on Thursday, January 10, at 6.30pm in the New Kershaw Centre.

"We also want to recruit volunteers who can help in a range of activities," she said. "That might be from coaching or leading sessions to refereeing, taking registers and collecting money, driving youngsters to events or just making and serving refreshments.

"We can offer training and support and help people to obtain recognised qualifications if they wish. There may even be opportunities for part-time employment in the future."

Louise added: "This is all about the East Bury community working and playing together. So why not come along and get involved?"
