AT long last the new Tesco in Leyland looks likely to be up and running by Christmas 2002 -- and what a huge building it looks like being.
Although I'm very happy that Leyland is finally going to have a decent supermarket I can't help feeling concerned about the changing landscape at that end of town and the mix of old and new buildings near each other.
Such a huge, modern shop could really spoil the historic features in Southern Towngate. The Cross, Cenotaph and museum may all end up overshadowed by the new Tesco.
Worse still if it ends up being an ugly monstrosity like the old Foodgiant.
Leyland is more than just a shopping town. It has lots of ancient features and one of the best parks for miles around.
These things should not be forgotten when putting up a new supermarket or other building.
I just hope the new Tesco is in keeping with the old features like the Cross and doesn't turn into some enormous eyesore, slap bang in the town centre.
