THE chaos caused by the lack of gritting of local roads on Saturday night was an absolute disgrace.
Those charged with the responsibility of looking after the town's roads ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Then to compound the problem with their feeble cover-up, as they did in Tuesday's Bury Times, merely shows up the anonymous employees of the Cleansing Department as lairs in my eyes.
They stated that the roads had been gritted. They were obviously not in the queue on Brandlesholme Road where the surface close to the junction with Longsight Road resembled a sheet of glass. It took us the best part of two hours to travel three-and-a-half miles. I also gather many other major routes in the borough suffered similar problems and delays.
They also stated that they had not been made aware of any problems, either at the time or since. Strange then that when I telephoned I was informed that I was one of more than 100 complainants! May I say to those in the Cleansing Department: hold up your hands, apologise and assure us that this will never happen again. Lies merely compound the anger.
As for our councillors, may I suggest that they launch an investigation. Thousands of their constituents who suffered need reassuring that action will be taken, and those responsible will be suitably reprimanded.
Oh, and no hiding behind the "we have no legal responsibility to grit the roads" banner. Duties are moral as well as legal.
Remember we, as voters, have no legal responsibility to vote you back in next time!
