ENVIRONMENTAL services staff in the borough are warning local people to check their shelves and cupboards after certain tinned hot dogs were withdrawn from sale and a recall issued.
Asda and Lidl supermarkets acted after concerns that there was a small risk of food poisoning and that some of the cans were at risk of exploding when opened.
The Food Standards Agency has supported the action of the two companies and has issued a food hazard warning to local authorities.
The products concerned are as followed:
Lidl supermarkets: Dulano Hot Dog Sausages 400g cans, best before Sept 2004 and Chira Hot Dog Sausages 400g cans, best before Sept 2004.
Asda supermarkets: Smart Price Hot Dog Sausages 400g cans, best before Sept 2003.
Reported incidents say that cans sold in Lidl, which have ring pulls, can explode and there is then a danger of people cutting their fingers. Microbiological examination of the cans on sale at Lidl and Asda have revealed bacterial growth that indicates either under-processing or post-processing contamination.
