LEIGH RMI will go into tonight's Lancashire Cup meeting with Rossendale United with assistant manager Dave Miller declaring that "we couldn't win a tiddlywinks cup at the moment."
Miller was speaking after the Railwaymen were hammered 5-0 at Southport on Saturday, and he will certainly not be confident of victory in tonight's game with the Hilton Park side having drawn one and lost five of their last six games.
Leigh should welcome back both Gerry Harrison and Dino Maamria for the second round tie after they were suspended for the trip to Haig Avenue but a squad that has been reduced to the bare bones by severe financial problems at the club is unlikely to be tampered with greatly, as replacements are minimal.
Indeed, four former Railwaymen are expected to figure in the United side, who lie in fourth place in the Unibond First Division. Striker Troy Hayder, midfielders Ricky Harris and Lee Fitzpatrick and full-back Chris Scott will all feel that they have something to prove against their former team-mates, who may still be without goalkeeper Mark Westhead after he suffered a recurrence of a shoulder and back injury prior to the Southport game.
Craig Dootson is expected to retain his place in the starting line-up. Leigh met Rossendale at the same stage of last year's competition, and progressed to the quarter-final with a Steve Jones goal 20 minutes from time although the performance was less than convincing.
RMI looked much slicker in a 2-1 pre-season success. meeting, when goals from Dino Maamria and Tony Black ensured a 2-1 success.
