A ROSSENDALE quarry has scooped first prize in the Lancashire Minerals and Waste Sites Environmental Awards for 2001.
Jamestone Quarry in Grane Road, Haslingden, is operated by Aggregate Industries Limited.
The judges were particularly impressed with improvements at the site over the last few years, including the removal of disused lagoons and the restoration of historic quarries to blend in with the surrounding landscape.
They commented on the environmental awareness of the manager and the exceptionally high standards of operation.
In accepting the award, Geoff Storey, Senior Estates Manager for Aggregate Industries, said: "We are delighted with the results of Lancashire County Council's awards scheme.
"To secure first place is an outstanding achievement and reflects the effort put in, and the commitment the company and staff have for the environment.
"This award clearly demonstrates our commitment to continual improvement."
