A COMPANY'S good work hasn't gone to waste after it won first and second place in an environmental competition for the standard of its quarries.
Aggregate Industries Ltd's Jamestone Quarry in Grane Road, Haslingden, was the winner, while Brockholes Quarry, off junction 31 of the M6, was a runner-up in the Lancashire Minerals and Waste Sites Environmental Awards 2001.
A quarry from Carnforth was the second runner-up in the competition, which was delayed because of foot and mouth.
The Lancashire County Council award honours businesses which go beyond compliance with planning conditions, show pride in their operations and have good links with the local community.
Judges said Jamestone Quarry's manager was very environmentally aware and had high standards of operation. They were also impressed that the site had also been restored to blend in more with the surrounding area.
Geoff Storey, senior estates manager for Aggregate Industries, said: "To secure first and second places is an outstanding achievement and reflects the effort put in, and the commitment the company and staff have for the environment."
