STUDENT Sophie Lawrenson is hoping for the adventure of a lifetime in Indonesia this summer.

Sophie (20) has been given the opportunity to carry out conservation work in the rainforests and corals in South East Sulawesi, Indonesia.

She is pictured pinpointing the Indonesian island where she hopes to travel to.

The Leeds University student will be working as a volunteer along with other students from different universities, providing she can raise £3,000 for the trip.

The project is being run by Operation Wallacea which was set up in 1995 and, with the help of volunteers and scientists, has helped preserve some of the most endangered areas of coral reef and rainforest.

Sophie, from Crosby Road, Radcliffe said: "It's going to be a totally different experience. I'm hoping to use it for my dissertation - after all there's not much coral in Bury." She is not worried about the language barrier and is confident that she will pick up some useful basic phrases in the first few days when she attends a language course.

Sophie, who is studying environmental science, is planning several fund-raising activities including packing bags in a supermarket and holding a raffle. In addition all the students taking part in the expedition are hoping to be sponsored to walk, run, hop, hitchhike or use any other unconventional way to travel between each other's universities over the Easter holiday.

Sophie and her friends will be making their way to Sheffield but haven't yet decided how they will get there.

Sophie is also appealing to companies and organisations for sponsorship and for donations for the raffle.
