A PRESTON schoolgirl with severe disabilities has shown unbelievable courage to scoop a prestigious national award.

Munirah Bangee, 11, who attends Penwortham Girls' High School, Cop Lane, Preston, will receive the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award today (Thursday) from South Ribble Mayor Norman Crossley in a special presentation.

The hard-working youngster is being given the prestigious honour in recognition of her bravery and dedication to overcome serious mobility problem and speech difficulties.

Throughout her short life hard-working Munirah has demonstrated outstanding courage and determination to achieve in school and has been a shining example to many of her classmates.

Mrs Ruth Millward-Hopkins, assistant headteacher of lower school, said: "All members of staff find that Munirah is not prepared to be defeated by anything.

"She appreciates the support given to her by her friends but is very determined to stay as independent as possible. Munirah is an inspiration to us all."

In school Munirah rarely shuns away from the normal classroom activities and has taken part in many challenging school-based lessons as well as other tasks.

She does everything other 11-year-olds would do, including playing with her friends and going swimming with her family, and has not let her condition get the better of her. At home Munirah also finds time to continue with her studies of the Koran.

Mrs Millward-Hopkins added: "Munirah is a very special little girl, a real bright spark. She is always cheerful and this, together with her courage and determination, has shown her inner strength. She is very deserving and has never allowed her problems to stand in her way".

The Government-organised award was set up two years ago following the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. It rewards outstanding contributions made by secondary school students to their schools and communities. Annually schools can nominate one student or group of students for the award.

Since the scheme started over 1900 pupils from 750 schools across the UK have been honoured.
