A LOOK at the latest singles releases.

GARBAGE: Cherry Lips (Mushroom)

Shirley Manson, Butch Vig and the gang seem to have fallen from grace without ever really doing much wrong. It's a lifetime -- in chart terms -- since the power driven chords of Stupid Girl and Queer which excited and captivated us during the demise of Brit Pop. Now without the freshness and energy of those early days, there is little here to suggest that missing spark can be ignited again. CL

STELLA BROWNE: Never Knew Love (Perfecto)

WIth an annoying catchingly chorus that thumps away in the back of your brain long after the single has stopped playing, this has a good chance of dancefloor success. Interesting, low-key vocals help make this slightly different from the usual club fodder.JA

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS: Star Guitar (Virgin)

The second single from their hugely anticipated fourth album, Come With Us, is a beautiful, uplifting record. It's sunshine bleached guitar lines twist around the pulsating rhythm track. It also features two mighty mixes from Pete Heller, which will have dancefloors jumping up and down the country, and a brand new track, Base 6. CL

ALL STARS: The Land Of Make Believe (Island)

Only two weeks into the new year and already our young teen idols are re-working music from the past. This cover of the Bucks Fizz hit will rank amongst the year's worst records.CL

BEN CHRISTOPHERS: Leaving My Sorrow Behind (V2)

The title might suggest happier times ahead for this solo artist but believe me this is depressing stuff. For fans of the likes of Tori Amos or Bjork. CL
