COUNCIL bosses have promised financial assistance to help with the 136th Great Harwood Agricultural Show.

The event, which attracts competitors and visitors from all over the country, was cancelled last year amid the foot and mouth crisis and show organisers want to ensure this year's show compensates for the loss.

Organisers wrote to Hyndburn Council's leisure services department recommending that local entertainment planned for the Golden Jubilee weekend be combined with the June 3 event.

Rona Westell, show secretary, added: "In order to combine our celebrations and offer our entertainment to the general public free of charge, it is essential that our finances break even."

In order to do this, she said that financial help would be needed to cover the gate and car park receipts.

Council leader Peter Britcliffe, this week agreed. He said: "The show is part of the fabric of life in Hyndburn. There can be money made available through the area council and there are other grants available which we will look at, as well as the community chest. Whichever way, we will ensure those funds are available."

Every year, thousands of people flock to the Great Harwood showground, off Hyndburn Road, which is packed with market stalls, big ring attractions and displays, as well as the animal groups for judging.
