SHOTS were fired at a group of Asian youths as they stood outside a Bury takeaway.
At least two cartridges were discharged from a pump action shotgun in what detectives have described as a "dispute" between two Asian men.
No-one was injured as a result of Sunday night's (Jan 13) incident which happened outside the Punjab takeaway in Lord Street.
However, one man who lives nearby described how the 20-strong group of youths were forced to dive for cover as the marksman fired indiscriminately towards them.
The resident, who did not want to be named, claimed that an opposing gang of Asians from the Cheetham Hill area were responsible for the attack.
He also described the incident as a "drive-by shooting", a claim that has been quickly dismissed by one of Bury's top detectives.
Detective Inspector Bill Beddows confirmed two shots were heard and shotgun cartridges have been taken away for forensic examination.
However, he added: "There is no evidence to support any drive-by shooting.
"It would appear from initial interviews that the incident revolves around a dispute between two men. That matter is being investigated."
Anyone who can help police with their inquiries into Sunday's shooting incident should contact Bury CID on 856 8150.
