NEWCASTLE United Reserves completed the double over Rovers last night at Kingston Park.
It was a poor performance from Rovers who lacked an attacking edge in front of watching first team boss Graeme Souness.
Several scouts were also in the crowd checking on the form of Egil Ostenstad, Damien Johnson and Simon Grayson, though none had games to shout about.
Lomana LuaLua scored the winning goal in the first reserve match of the season which was enough to give the Magpies a 1-0 win at Morecambe, and he opened the scoring again last night from the penalty spot on 27 minutes after Olivier Bernard had been brought down.
Referee Eddie Ilderton, who had denied Bernard an earlier penalty claim, waved away Rovers' protests this time before LuaLua stepped up to score.
Shola Ameobi made it 2-0 five minutes before the break racing onto a through ball before touching it round the keeper and knocking into the unguarded goal.
Jamie Coppinger made it 3-0 after 55 minutes with a firm shot from just inside the box and Ameobi headed his second, and United's fourth, three minutes later from a Wayne Quinn cross.
