THE top floor of a Burnley mill will be removed after its gable end collapsed into the street.
A report from structural engineers has found that a defective steel beam in the roof of the building in Cow Lane buckled, pushing brick work into the street. That, and a combination of cold weather, snow and ice, are blamed for the incident on Saturday, January 5.
Cow Lane and Sutcliffe Street were closed off by the emergency services and have remained closed. Sutcliffe Street was due to re-open today but Cow Lane will stay closed until the new roof is in place.
A date will be set for the work to begin after consultation with owners and tenants of the building.
A spokesman for Burnley Council's building directorate said: "The roof is not safe so the top floor will be taken away.
"The defective beam will be replaced and the front of the building on Cow Lane will be recladded to improve its appearance.
