PENDLE MP Gordon Prentice last night joined a rebellion of 26 Labour MPs over government plans for the future of patient involvement in the NHS.
The rebels supported an amendment to the NHS Reform and Health Care Professions Bill put forward by David Hinchliffe, Labour chairman of the Health Select Committee, that would have seen patients' councils established in every local authority area.
The new council's are designed to become replacements for the community health councils being controversially abolished by the government.
Peter Walsh, director of the Association of Community Health Councils said he was delighted that Mr Prentice and so many other Labour MPs had taken a principled stand.
