THE successful fight to save, refurbish and preserve historic Astley Hall was related when Elaine Hurst and Christine Jones addressed Tyldesley Probus Club members.
They explained how Adam Mort acquired the original hall in 1595. In 1650, his grandson, Adam, and Margaret Mort rebuilt the hall (aka Dam House).
At the end of the 19th century, the pride of the village became a hospital and when this closed in 1994, Morts Astley Heritage Trust -- a volunteer body of which Elaine and Christine play vital roles -- campaigned to save the hall and bought Dam House and its woodland with the aid of grants. Now, it is restored to its former splendour and houses a community clinic, tea rooms, nursery and offices.
At the January 24 meeting of Tyldesley Probus Club, guest speaker is Martin Green, of Wigan Leisure.
