THE sounds of the Caribbean will brighten-up Leigh with the arrival of the Steel Pan band -- just up the road from Nel Pan Lane!
Last week's launch of a scheme at Westleigh High School, chosen by Wigan Council to be the centre for the bands, involved a performance by Swinton Steel Pan Band and workshops for both primary and high school pupils.
The steel pan bands are now available for after school and evening clubs, primary children, high school students and adults are welcome to join. There are three different bands which will allow anyone to develop skills.
Stuart Barton, head of music at Westleigh said: "This is a real coup for the school and allows the range of musical opportunities for children and adults to increase yet further. The steel pans are easy to learn and yet create a lovely sound. When they are played you can close your eyes and imagine yourself on a desert island."
Anyone interested in learning to play a steel pan can contact Stuart Barton (school pupils) or Pat Morgan (adults) on 01942 202580 for more details.
