POLICE are investigating a suspected arson attack at a house in Leigh.
The front door of a terraced house in Twist Lane, leading to an upstairs flat, had been kicked open and large quantities of paper had been set alight in the hallway.
A woman occupant of the downstairs flat escaped through the back door. She suffered smoke inhalation but declined hospital treatment. The 18-year-old spent the night at her mother's because she was too scared to return to the flat.
She said: "I was asleep and smelled the smoke. Luckily I managed to get out. I was leaning on the outside fence with tears of shock running down my face."
The hallway and stairs to the top flat were destroyed but the apartment was only smoke damaged. Council staff were called to board up the entrance. Neighbours refused to comment.
