FORMER Manchester United defender Henning Berg today vowed to succeed where the rest of the Premiership have failed by derailing the Ruud Van Nistelrooy bandwagon.

United's brilliant Dutchman goes into tomorrow's clash with Rovers at Old Trafford knowing he can make history by becoming the first ever player to score in eight consecutive Premiership matches.

But Berg and his Ewood team-mates are ready to pull out all the stops in a bid to spoil the party -- even though the Norwegian has hailed Van Nistelrooy as one of the greatest striker's to play for United in recent history.

"Ruud's in a great run of form. He's been outstanding in the last few weeks and he can't stop scoring goals," said Berg.

"So we're all aware that he has the chance of breaking the record and I'm sure he'll be fired up to do that, but he can't do it on his own.

"He's reliant on the rest of his team-mates to provide him with the service so we've got to work on trying to stop that.

"Earlier in the season when United weren't getting results and they were making mistakes at the back, I think he needed a few games to settle in because the Premiership is totally different to any other league in Europe.

"But now he's adjusted, he's starting to look like a top quality striker -- one of the best at United in recent history -- and he wants to finish the season as the league's top scorer.

"His finishing is excellent, his movement and team play are outstanding, he's great to link up with and he seems to have formed a formiddable understanding with Ole Solskjaer.

"Their partnership over the last couple of months has given Ole a whole new lease of life and they are going to pose a massive threat, but we won't go there in fear."

With both sides desperate for points for different reasons, the stakes are high going into tomorrow's clash, regardless of all the extra hype surrounding Van Nistelrooy's record attempt.

Rovers need a result to ease the pressure in the bottom half of the table while a victory for United would turn up the heat in the title race.

But, though the Champions are currently on a magnificent run of seven successive wins, Berg insists Rovers can still approach the game with confidence.

And the 31-year-old centre-back is particularly keen to put in a good show himself as he prepares to return to Old Trafford for the first time since he quit the Reds 18 months ago.

"It's going to be a great test of our ability and the fact they've won seven in a row makes it even harder," said Berg.

"But we've also done reasonably well ourselves over the last couple of weeks and with Andy Cole now onboard, we can approach the game with confidence.

"Quite a few of our players have United connections so we'll be keen to put in a good performance against them.

"But it doesn't matter if you've played for them before or not, everyone who plays against United is fired up to do well against them. I really enjoyed playing against them at Ewood earlier in the season and I thought we deserved a draw on the night, and possibly even a win.

"But now we are attempting to take that extra step by trying to get a result at Old Trafford.

"We all want to go there and give a good account of ourselves.

"If we could get a draw that would be a great achievement."

"It's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility because we've got some great players of our own going forward."

Manager Graeme Souness is still sweating on the fitness of skipper Garry Flitcroft who is struggling to shake off a groin injury.

But Keith Gillespie should be fit to resume despite limping off against Barnsley in midweek.

Rovers are likely to choose from: Friedel, Curtis, Neill, Bjornebye, Berg, Taylor, Dunn, Tugay, Gillespie, Duff, Jansen, Cole, Hughes, Hignett, Mahon, Flitcroft, Johansson, Kelly.
