AN RSPCA inspector turned into the Pied Piper to care for almost 100 rats after the pet rodents had been left to breed in a Blackpool house.
Kath Mayberry removed 31 rats from a Mereside address after owners could no longer cope. But the nightmare snowballed for the RSPCA as they later discovered that a large majority of the rats removed from the house were pregnant females, leaving the animal charity having to find homes for around 100 animals.
Insp Mayberry said: "There was certainly no malice on the part of the owner but as a result of this person not realising just how quickly rats can breed, the RSPCA finds itself having to care and look for new homes for around 100 animals.
"Despite the general public perception of rats, they do make very good pets. They are better than many other small animals for children and are relatively easy to look after. However, it is vitally important that people make sure they do not mix males and females."
Many have been re-homed but there are still several dozen waiting to find new homes.
