MY 16-year-old daughter, who attends Tottington High School, went to Manchester from Bury by Metrolink on Friday, Dec 28. As on previous trips, she bought herself a half-day return ticket for £1.50.
At Crumpsall, a female ticket inspector boarded and told my daughter that she was cheating the system by not paying the full adult fare. She immediately gave her an on-the-spot fine of £10, doubled to £20 if she didn't pay. Luckily, she had money given to her as a Christmas present and she gave it to the inspector. She was then asked to leave the tram and buy another ticket at the full adult price of £1.80, from Crumpsall to Manchester. Later, she had to buy yet another ticket from Manchester to Bury, again at the adult price. Altogether it cost her £15.10.
My daughter is still a minor and still attends school. I think it is absolutely disgraceful how she was treated. Being thrown off a tram for having no ticket I can understand, but my daughter had done nothing wrong and was punished for it.
In future, when she wants to go to Manchester, I will take her in the car. It is far cheaper.
AN ANGRY FATHER
