THE experiences of a mother whose son died from a flesh eating disease will be featured in an hour-long television programme.
Doreen Marsden, of Moor Hey Farm, Ribchester, was filmed in October as part of a six-part series for digital channel Animal Planet talking about the death of 23-year-old Lee Spark.
The programme will chronicle the way Doreen used Lee's tragic death to help other victims of Severe Streptococcal Infections and Necrotising Fasciitis (NF) -- dubbed 'galloping gangrene' and the 'flesh eating bug' because it kills human tissue at a rate of inches per hour.
The producers were particularly impressed by the way Doreen dealt with the tradegy by setting up the first support group for the disease -- The Lee Spark Foundation.
And now Peledu Telesgop, a outh Wales based-independent production company which supplies films for the Discovery and terrestrial channels, is to film her again later in the year to compile a one-hour documentary which will be solely about her experiences.
Doreen's first TV appearances are at 9.30pm on January 26 and March 9 -- two episodes of a six part series made by Peledu Telesgop called 'Kill or Cure' which discusses how maggots and leaches are being used in medical treatments.
She was filmed with a survivor of NF who lost 40 per cent of his body to the 'flesh eating bug'.
Doreen said: "I felt like Joan Collins when the film crew arrived. I talked about NF and it felt great doing this for our lovely Lee.
"I don't know how long I will be on for -- with it being an animal channel they are talking about all sorts of bacteria.
"They want to film me again now to hear my story. With the ongoing love I have for Lee, my ambition is to put what I can into helping others. It's positive."
Lee died in October 1999 days after complaining of 'flu-like symptons, which turned out to be NF.
Doreen set up the group after being shocked to find there was no information or support for survivors of the disease or their relatives.
It became a registered charity in September and links 100 survivors, who meet up several times a year for fundraisers and to share information.
Bromwin Davies, of Peledu Telesgop, confirmed Doreen's appearance on the programme and the plans for an hour-long feature.
She said: "It will be a programme about the support group and Doreen. It's a long term plan and will happen by the end of the year.
"We will try to sell it on to whichever channel wants it."
