A LOOK at the key stats and figures from the game against Sheffield Wednesday.

BURNLEY

NIK MICHOPOULOS: His last minute penalty save had no bearing on the result but he had some uncertain moments...6

DEAN WEST: Had a tough time in competition with the impressive Gerald Sibon and so failed to get forward as often as he would like...6

ARTHUR GNOHERE: A disappointing display from the Frenchman, blamed by Ternent for the second goal and lucky not to be sent off...5

IAN COX: Shared in the general uncertainty that afflicted the defence and lucky not to be punished for a first half slip...6

GRAHAM BRANCH: Sadly another bad day at the office for the left-back who made way for Maylett at half-time...5

ALAN MOORE: In the absence of Glen Little he is the creative force in the side and no one tried harder than he did...7

KEVIN BALL: Forced a good save from Kevin Pressman with a header but like his team-mates was not at his best...6

TONY GRANT: Gave away the ball on more occasions than normal but kept plugging away...6

LEE BRISCOE: Booed throughout by the away fans but delivered a couple of dangerous corners that created problems...6

IAN MOORE: Starved off any decent service and made way for Papadopoulos near the end...6

GARETH TAYLOR: Tucked away his penalty well enough but did not get any more joy than his strike partner...6

TALKING TACTICS

THE return of Gareth Taylor to the starting line-up meant Burnley reverted to the 4-4-2 formation that has served them well this season. The Owls matched that but used Gerald Sibon well down the left. Ternent introduced Brad Maylett to add width but they continued to be out fought.

SOCCER HERO

ALAN MOORE was involved in most of the brighter Burnley moments and his shot on half-time grazed the bar. He never stopped trying, kept looking to take on his man and link up with colleagues.

THE VILLAIN

FOR the second time in a month it is Shefki Kuqi. Sibon had the class but it was Kuqi who got the winner as a reward for a display that illustrated why Ternent wanted to buy him.

SKILL SPOT

CANDIDATES were few and far between but Tony Grant did produce a clever flick in the first half that set up an attack of promise.

TIME FOR ACTION

14Tony Grant slips Gareth Taylor through but Kevin Pressman dives at his feet

15A ball in from Stephen Haslam reaches Shefki Kuqi but he pulls his shot wide

22Ian Cox's slip lets in Paul McClaren but he shoots wide from a tight angle

31Grant's ball forward is nodded back by Dean West and Lee Briscoe shoots over

33Pressman's long kick down the middle is missed by the Burnley defence and McClaren scorers

45Taylor finds Moore in space and he lets fly from 25 yards, hitting the top of the bar

46Arthur Gnohere and Nik Michopoulos make a mess of a simple situation and Kuqi nearly gets in

63West has his clearance charged down by Gerald Sibon but gets back to deflect his shot

65Taylor wastes a good chance when he tries to flick home after a pass from Brad Maylett

71Kevin Ball's header is held by Pressman under pressure from Taylor

76The Clarets are handed a lifeline by Ashley Westwood's handball and Taylor nets from the spot

82Another Westwood error exposes Pressman and he is injured in a clash with Taylor

90Two minutes into stoppage time Kuqi runs beyond Arthur Gnohere and nets the winner

90Five minutes later a repeat sees Gnohere foul Kuqi but Sibon's weak penalty is saved

MATCH VERDICT

THE Clarets worst display at home in the league this season and three points dropped in the chase for promotion. The squad needs strengthening as injuries continue to deprive Ternent of options. On this form the Owls are too good to go down.
