AN ATHERTON primary school is set to welcome back a familiar face when the new head teacher arrives.

Gill Burrow has been appointed to take charge at beacon school St Philip's in the spring, taking over from acting headteacher Linda Owen.

She previously worked in the school as the deputy head, leaving in 1999 to become acting head at Westleigh Methodists where she enjoyed considerable success.

When Gill went to Westleigh Methodists, the school came under special measures, but seven months later those conditions were removed and in September 2000 Gill's appointment was made permanent.

Last year Westleigh Methodists, one of 26 schools within the Leigh Education Action zone, celebrated a prestigious Investors In People award.

Other achievements have included a good Ofsted report in April 2000, a school achievement award in 2001 and an excellent PANDA report last year.

Gill, who hails from Horwich, is also a governor at Westleigh High School and has 21 years of experience as a teacher at Christ Church, Pennington under her belt.

She said: "I am now looking forward to finding new challenges with old friends at St Philip's."
