THE inquest has opened into the death in Israel of a former Bury man.

Bury District Coroner Mr Barrie Williams, was opening the hearing in the case of 35-years-old Andrew Lionel Bowers, who was found dead in his flat in Haifa on January 17 by friends who had been concerned about not seeing him for a few days.

Evidence of identification was given to the coroner by his brother, Dr Stephen Laurence Bowers, of St George's Road, Unsworth, Bury. Dr Bowers told the coroner that his brother, a former Whitefield resident and ex-pupil of King David High School, went to live in Israel in 1998.

Dr Bowers said his brother had had some mental health problems and was on prescription medication. There had been a deterioration in his health after his father died seven years ago, and Andrew had been in hospital on a number of occasions due to problems with his medication.

Mr Bowers travelled back to Britain last August to spend time with his family and he appeared to be doing well.

Dr Bowers told the coroner that his brother had last been seen on January 15. When he was found dead prescription medication was found nearby.

A post mortem examination showed that there was no pre-existing disease to account for Mr Bowers' death, so further histological and toxicological tests were being undertaken. The body had been brought back to Britain for burial in North Manchester Jewish Cemetery.

Mr Williams adjourned the hearing.
