A TEENAGE boy's pierced nipple has led to a health and safety clampdown at the Ramsbottom Rascals swimming club.

Coaches have pledged to enforce rules which will mean the 15 year old having to cover his body jewellery with a plaster when training or competing in galas.

The committee, told by the club's chief coach Rick Wesolowski of his concerns, has also rubber-stamped the clampdown that will also include watches, rings and earings.

"What is good for David Beckham is good enough for us," said Wesolowski, referring to the England skipper having to cover his own ring and ear studs when staring for Manchester United is his country.

The coach added: "There might not be specific ASA rules. but there is one to ensure everyone is safe in the water. Body piercing does not project our sport's image."

Ahead of AGM (on February 20), the committee heard that finances were in a healthy position -- and that's despite an £100 fine imposed by the Central Lancs League for returning trophies in a condition "not satisfactory for immediate re-presentation."

Wesolowski happy about the club's "very successful" 2001 taking on, and beating squad clubs in nationals competition, is disappointed about entry levels for this weekend's open age championship at Broughton.

He blamed the fact only 33 swimmers had entered on forms being sent out late by the organisers.

But the committee has pledged to promote the various events more, and coaches will be looking to encourage up-and-coming junior members to compete.

Sheila Hoy earned a round of applause for her efforts organising the club's Christmas disco -- a big funky night that raised £600.
