YOUNG pups are being sought to take part in the Commonwealth Games.
Greater Manchester Police has launched an urgent appeal to bolster its dog handlers sections throughout the region by recruiting new hounds.
The force is looking for male German Shepherd or other large working dogs aged between one and two, with a lively but steady temperament.
The dogs are guaranteed an extremely rewarding and fulfilling life serving the people of Greater Manchester, and may even help to police the Commonwealth Games in the summer.
Inspector Jim Weeden, of GMP's Dog training Section, said: "Many people may have bought such dogs, unaware of how large they grow and now could be finding them too difficult to control. But once trained, they may make perfect police dogs.
"If the dogs successfully complete the initial assessment and 13-week training course, we are now willing to pay the owners a sum of money which will be agreed in advance."
Once the dogs have finished their training, which includes obedience, searching techniques and other criminal work, they can work for up to seven years in the police force.
Most dogs go on to spend a happy retirement living with their handlers.
If you think your dog meets the requirements, please contact GMP's Dog Training Section on 856 1794 / 1791 between 8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, to arrange a home visit.
