A KIND winner who scooped £100 of gift vouchers has handed the lot to a Preston homeless shelter.

George Pritchard, of South Meadow Lane, Preston, was entered into a prize draw when he filled in a questionnaire last year.

To his surprise he scooped £100 in Marks and Spencer's vouchers.

But charity champ George, 70, thought the town centre Fox Street Night Shelter could put the vouchers to better use and donated it to the homeless organisation.

The former post officer worker said: "I was at the bus station and filled in some questions about the local transport situation. Mine is the one that came out of the bag!"

The completed questionnaires were entered into a prize draw by Lancashire County Council and George won the prize ahead of 1,200 other entries.

George said: "If it had been £25 I would have got a shirt, but £100 was too much."

And George's first thought was to the homeless people staying at the Fox Street Shelter -- part of the Central Methodist Church.

He said: "I knew some of the people who work there. I'm a church member so I knew what they were doing there.

"If it happened again I would give it to charity."

Wendy Cryer, manager of the Fox Street shelter, said: "We most certainly are grateful. We survive on donations. If it wasn't for donations we wouldn't be here.

County Councillor Nora Ward, executive member for highways and transportation, who presented the vouchers to Mr Pritchard, said: "George's generosity is to be applauded and I am sure everyone involved with the shelter will appreciate his kindness."
