THE fate of Preston's bus station has been debated a lot recently and some have condemned it as a place frequented by potential muggers and assailants.
Surely this is a problem in any urban area -- should we dig up Avenham Park and Moor Park because of it?
The fault I have with the bus station is that it was not built nearer to the railway station. Could this not be solved by linking the two via an underground railway line?
The existing 'Miley Tunnel', which starts at Maudland Bank and runs under Moor Lane, could provide three quarters of the line and a new stretch of line could be built to beneath the bus station.
There are those who would ridicule this, saying that it would be a huge task and a multi-million pound venture, but you could say that about many road schemes over the past 20 years, such as the M65 extension, widening the M6 to eight lanes and by-passes.
