BOWLAND Pennine Mountain Rescue Team will embark on their annual exercise in the Trough of Bowland this weekend to practise their search, rescue and medical skills.
They will be supported by colleagues from neighbouring Mountain Rescue Teams in Rossendale, Bolton and Kendal.
Members of the Team never know what the weekend will bring, but it is sure to involve vast expanses of wet moorland to search with the help of Police and Ambulance helicopters.
Once casualties are located, a fast response team spring into action to bring urgent medical supplies. Casualties may need to be carried for several miles to safety.
The equipment used is carried on the backs of rescuers. It is similar to that found in the back of an ambulance, but it is waterproof and is almost indestructible. They also carry tents, spare clothing and food.
This is all part of the fun for unpaid volunteers giving up their free time to help anyone, anywhere, at any time. More information is available on www.bpmrt.org.uk
