SEVERAL areas of Hyndburn have been designated 20mph zones in a bid to reduce the number of accidents in the area.

Lancashire County Council, working with Hyndburn Council, has placed new traffic restrictions in areas of Accrington, Rishton and Great Harwood.

Accrington and Clayton-le-Moors already have several zones in existence and their effectiveness is to be reviewed shortly.

The new zones in the area are: Countess Street, Accrington, Station Road/ Walmsley Avenue, Rishton and St Huberts Road, Great Harwood.

The names refer to zones in the local area and contain a number of other streets or roads. Each zone is signed clearly at each entrance and exit.

County Coun Nora Ward, cabinet member for hghways and transportation, said: "We have now established 60 of these zones throughout

"Lancashire with the help and support of the local community.

"Our aim is to reduce road casualties in residential areas and we will monitor their effectiveness over the next 12 months."
