THE shocking results of a lifestyle survey of Radcliffe's elderly population has sparked a scheme to improve local facilities and services.

As reported in the Bury Times, the consultation, carried out by Radcliffe Health Group, found a host of complaints and concerns from pensioners.

These included feelings of being isolated, fears of going out, complaints about lengthy waits for hospital contact and appointments, and low expectations of the service.

They also voiced their concerns about accessing social services, benefits and other entitlements.

A project manager is now acting on the findings and this will include looking at developing a local centre for older people; improving information about and access to advice and support, and appraising the transport needs of older people. Coun Barry Briggs, chairman of Radcliffe Area Board, is supporting the drive.

He said: "The needs of older people is a priority for the Radcliffe Health Group. Following the consultation with older people in the area, I think we were all a bit dismayed at some of the sentiments, but determined that we would build on these comments to improve the experiences of older people living in Radcliffe."

He added: "We have the commitment of a multi-agency group that can drive forward the changes within the system to make services in the area more responsive to older people's needs."

A specific list of recommendations has already been drawn up for consideration by the Radcliffe Health Group. These include bringing health services often used by older people, such as physiotherapy, closer to older people's homes, increasing awareness among staff about anxieties that older people may suffer, and reducing the complexity of accessing certain services.

There are also plans for setting up a social and activity club for older people in the area to help reduce feelings of isolation.
