HUNDREDS of police officers across Lancashire were due to go to the polls today to vote on whether to accept radical changes to the police pay structure.

The planned changes include cutting the overtime rate, a bonus payment of £400 and the introduction of performance-related pay.

Under the plans, front-line officers could be eligible for special payments worth between £500 and £5,000.

Lancashire Police's 3,000 officers will be able to vote at police stations and headquarters during the ballot, which started at 7am and will last until midnight. The results are expected on February 25.

The government says the deal will make the vast majority of police officers will be better off.

Police Federation chairman Fred Broughton said: "We hope that every police officer able to vote in this historic ballot will take the opportunity to do so."
